India is another well known and historic tea producers and today exports about 14% of the tea sold internationally with over four hundred thousand acres of farmland used for tea. The first commercially produced tea where raised from seeds imported from China , although the tea was indigenous to the Assam region of India .
By the mid 19 th century India was exporting large amounts of tea for sale in London and gradually tea cultivation spread throughout the country, from Niligriri in the south to the Darjeeling in the North.
The plantations are a varying sea levels in India from low-grown areas (up to 2000 Feet) to high-grown (greater then 4000 feet about sea level). Generally the tea is harvested between March and October with each region of the country producing tea of a distinctive character. Several specialty blends are endorsed by the Tea Board of India to ensure that their quality and consistency is assured.
The vast majority of India 's tea crop is black teas a small amount of green tea is also produced for export to Afghanistan .
